Rainbow Dancer
I wanted to make a short film showing a superb line. Gerakios and even more so Rainbow Wall has some stunning colourful routes in a vertical style. Rainbow Dancer, 8a+, is the route I chose for its gesture.
To make this little project a success, several people helped me, Maria for the belaying, Sven and Will for the shooting and Valerie for the voice-over. It was also Valerie's idea to use the poem, Ithaca, by Constantin Cavafy.
This Greek author offers a new reading of the Odyssey. Until Cavafy, one could believe that Ulysses' real aim was to get to Ithaca, to find his wife, his home, his throne and his relatives, and that the thousand incidents and accidents along the way were so many unnecessary obstacles and unfortunate delays.
This is not the case, at least in Cavafy's eyes. In Ithaca he expresses the meaning, the message implicit in The Odyssey, namely that the most important thing about a journey is not its goal but the journey itself. Ithaca is here only the pretext for a return that becomes, through the trials it undergoes, a real return to oneself. Far from being obstacles or impediments, these trials become sources of salvation or knowledge and it is for them, through them, that the journey takes on its meaning.
This poem also takes on its full meaning when applied to climbing. It is a parable about our journey on the rock that initiates us, teaches us about ourselves and gives us so many emotions and raptures that the mere fact of reaching the top of the path.
